The Lowell Milken Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofits and Loyola Law School hosted over 150 nonprofit professionals and law students for the 27th Annual Western Conference on Tax-Exempt Organizations (WCTEO) at The California Endowment’s Downtown Los Angeles Center for Healthy Communities. With opening remarks delivered by UCLA Law Dean Michael Waterstone and Loyola Law Dean Brietta Clark, the two-day conference featured panels on a wide range of topics, including an update from Washington by Treasury and the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, a luncheon discussion of whether nonprofits can save journalism with NPR host Kai Rysdall, and a panel discussion of the take-aways from recent Supreme Court decisions. For more coverage of the conference, see “WCTEO 2024 Highlights” by Gene Takagi of NEO Law Group’s Nonprofit Law Blog.
The Planning Committee was chaired by LMPN Senior Scholar in Residence Ellen Aprill, who co-founded WCTEO, Faculty Director Jill Horwitz, and Executive Director Rose Chan Loui. Chan Loui and LMPN Program Manager were primarily responsible for coordinating the logistics of the conference. Chan Loui expressed appreciation for the support of the WCTEO’s sponsors, whose generosity allowed the conference to provide scholarships to attend WCTEO to 20 law students from UCLA and Loyola.
